Allow public to listen to Governance calls

Summary:
To open the fortnightly Governance calls to the public. The public will only be able to listen. Only governors will be allowed to talk.

Motivation:
With each governors call, a dedicated number of governors attend the call along with various members of the Pillar team. The Governors call is locked to only Governors and team members / admins. Opening the Governors call to the public to allow them to at least listen, think, talk to others, share the call live, stream the call if they want and potentially get others involved in the project or invite them to discord. It will help us grow our audience, spread awareness, allow others to feel involved and take an interest in the project and app.

Approach:

  • Open the Governors call to the public but only Governors can talk / ask questions
  • Send out an in-app notification to all users 5 minutes before the Governors call is due to start
  • Allow users to listen to the Governors call, and historic Governors calls within the app itself

I think this is great idea! It would allow others to listen before deciding if they want to onboard themselves as Governors. On top of that I would say that we should open daily team standups for Governors to listen only, however, this can be separate proposal.

Very good idea Kio 100 % agree

  • Very much in favor of open meetings. It would be nice to have a short-term plan. Community governance, I think likecoin has done a good job, you can refer to it.

Sounds like a good change of pace. Our community calls rarely get more than 7-8 visitors and they could be utilized so much more as a way to talk to the community. Since we’re talking about something that doesn’t make much changes to Pillar, I don’t think we need a proposal for this. A simple soft-vote will work just fine.

Governors are the only ones who can use their microphones, while the rest can listen and if there is time left, ask a few questions in public channels.

Should Governance calls be public?

I would request more reminders in discord about the call. Use discord stages also. Fine with the calls being public but with discord stages you can let the public user speak too if they raise their hand. If the call is already recorded and public then might as well let anyone who joins speak if they are polite. These calls need more actionable conclusions and takeaways. I’ve noticed some of the questions and answers tend to go in tangents.

That’s a great suggestion and even better feedback. I encourage you to speak up whenever you feel like the answer provided is unclear - at least to me that could be very helpful in delivering the message that doesn’t need to be repeated or that doesn’t trigger the exact same question at the next call.

A great idea in general I agree, I would keep the voice chat read only for non-governers…

opening up is great, if you guys can provide a little guidline on what you are planing to talk about in advance, let´s say five bullet or topics, in order for us to prepare more quality questions or talk. It feels a little weired to respond on the fly to topics we are confronted with just a few minutes ago. Team has more time to answer because you get to see them in advance.

Denis posted in discord: “We will be opening the governors call to the public 2 weeks from now using Stages.”

Today’s call will remain Governors only, but we will briefly cover some stuff that will happen to the call 2 weeks from now. We still need to setup the Discord to support Stages and set some ground rules so everything runs smooth.

Is this working? How many new listeners are we getting? Does the team like the YT Live format? I do enjoy the POAPs.

I don’t have the exact analytics but I can comment on my experiences with changes. Since they started, we’ve been getting around 10-50 members before and around the call time, which is a big change compared to a normal day. The POAPs have almost always been fully claimed, which accounts to anywhere between 150-200 NFTs dispersed to people. The new steps which required a Pillar wallet in order to claim it has seen great success as well, people have been needing to download the new wallet in order to claim it and so far it has been doing good. Viewership on youtube is still not as big as expected, but there is a slow and steady rise in numbers.
